With their historic harbours and beautiful panoramas, the IJssel Lake and Marker lake constitute a fantastic and varied sailing region. You can sail to an interesting spot from every point of the compass because the fresh-water IJssel Lake is not tidal. Its banks are dotted with numerous harbours, such as Medemblik, Hoorn, Edam,Volendam,Marken, Lelystad,Stavoren and Workum,each full of atmosphere and its own individual culture.

In 2007, the 75th anniversary of the completion of the IJssel Lake Dam and hence, the existence of the lake itself,was celebrated. Closing the Dam meant the disappearance of the wild Zuiderzee and the birth of the IJssel Lake. Many culturally historic and ecreational places of interest which recall the history of the former Zuiderzee can be found surrounding the lake.
