History

Channel Cruises Holland (CCH) was established in 1977 by Arie Krüse, an owner of motor passenger ships. Initially, only the company’s own vessels were used. However, due to rapid expansion boats belonging to third parties were soon also available for reservation. This meant the birth of the booking office. However, this resulted in a conflict of interest between booking the company’s own ships and ships belonging to third parties. This development culminated in the fact that in 1995 Jan Timmermans, an employee who had worked for CCH since the beginning, became the company’s new director and owner. Mr. Krüse remained the owner of the company’s own ships. The marketing and sales activities for sailing ships were now organised from Monnickendam.

CCH experienced a huge growth in the middle of the 1990s. This was due to the development of the ‘Boat-Bike Tours, a complete concept whereby tourists are offered an all-in one-week programme on board a luxurious ship. After years of development this proved to be a very successful concept. CCH has currently gained a leading position in this international market, and offers these trips under the brand name Boat Bike Tours. In addition to renting out boats, as of the year 2000 CCH increasingly focused on its activities as a tour operator.

Laurens Winkel of company ‘de Zeilvaart’ (ZE) saw the potential of using chartered boats (incl. sailing holidays) as part of the tour operating activities. At the same time, in order to better manage the company’s growth, Jan sought ways of working together with a larger organisation and/or to expand the management. After extensive talks ZE acquired the company on 1 January 2007. The company’s tour operating activities (boat/bike) and ZE (sailing) were integrated in the Monnickendam office. In 2008 CCH was initially acquired by Naupar (Nautical Partners, a merger between ZE and the company Hanzestad Compagnie). From 2009 Naupar chose to focus on its core-business; charter activities for traditional Dutch sailing ships. The company was now in the hands of one owner: Hanzestad Compagnie.

CCH currently operates as an independent company where the original concept (motor ships/ boat-bike holidays) has been expanded with an own programme of sailing holidays and renting out sea sailing ships (these two activities which were part of ZE best matched the activities of CCH). Via his holding company, Laurens Winkel is currently CCH’s only owner .

CCH has established a separate private company with limited liability (100% subsidiary) for the tour operating activities (CCH Tours BV) in which CCH’s holiday product (package tours) have been integrated. This product under two labels ‘Boat Bike Tours’ and ‘Sailing Adventure Tours’. The activities (charter) relating to motor ships and (sea) sailing ships will continue under the name Channel Cruises Holland BV.
